A paper on the cultural issue of Adultery
How could you do this to me? Where did I go wrong? Why did this happen to us? Where do we go from here? Will I see my mother and father loving each other again? Is marriage even worth it? And the most popular of all: How can a loving God allow this tragedy to happen? These are few of the countless questions heard from the voices of those deeply hurt and affected by the act of Adultery. Our society is currently battling many plagues which are destroying families and individuals, but most importantly these plagues seek to destroy the first and most sacred institution created by God: marriage. Adultery is one of those plagues which in addition to destroying marriages and their children, it destroys or hinders relationships with God and ultimately leads to eternal death. In an effort to gain a better understanding on the sin of Adultery and perhaps empower others with biblical wisdom in order to prevent the spread of such disease, let us explore it’s biblical view as well as the world view, it’s various forms of manifestation and consequences on everyone affected, and finally God’s answer to its solution.
Easton’s Bible Dictionary defines adultery as “conjugal infidelity. An adulterer was a man who had illicit intercourse with a married or a betrothed woman, and such a woman was an adulteress. Intercourse between a married man and an unmarried woman was fornication. Adultery was regarded as a great social wrong, as well as a great sin” (Adultery). In Exodus 20:14, God gave of us His command not to commit adultery. Jesus took it a step further in explaining that adultery doesn’t even have to be a physical act, but he who lusts in his heart over another woman commits the sin of adultery (Matthew 5:27-28).
