When selecting two companies from the Fortune 100 list some may choose to pick the top ranking company. But not this shopper I chose two company that I’ve purchase items from regularly and two companies that I am familiar with so why not retail. Number eighty-six Zappos and number 93 Nordstrom. These two companies aren’t in the top five or ten but I was really interested that both companies made the top 100.
In 1999, our founder Nick Swinmurn was walked around a mall in San Francisco looking for a pair of shoes. Throughout his mall visit Swinmurn did find anything that was the neither right size nor color or anything that fit his taste. Nick spent the next hour in the mall, walking from store to store, and finally went home empty-handed and irritated (Zappos, 2014).
When Nick got home he was tried looking for his shoes online and was again failed. Nick was surprised that there was no major online retailer that specialized in shoes (Zappos, 2014). So, since it was 1999 and anything seemed possible at the time, Nick decided to quit his day job and start an online shoe retailer and Zappos.com was born!
The original goal was to create a web site that offered the absolute best selection in shoes in terms of brands, styles, colors, sizes, and widths. Over the past 9 years, the brand and ambitions have evolved, and in addition to offering the best selection, with the goal to be the company that provides the absolute best service online not just in shoes, but in any category.
One day, 30% of all retail transactions in the US will be online.
People will buy from the company with the best service and the best selection.
Zappos.com will be that online store.
As the company grows, it has become more and more important to explicitly define the core values from which we develop our culture, our brand, and our business…
