In Ursula K.Leguin’s short story ”The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” Guin describes Omelas is a land of fantasy and how the people of Omelas are happy. People of Omelas live their life whichever they want since Omelas is a some kind of fantasy world they are simply living in an utopia but one can understand from the story that they are not all happy. There is a child who suffers greatly in Omelas. This child effects people of Omelas life, in a way that can reduce the people of Omelas prosperity. I will discuss in this paper if it is better that a society suffer to improve the life of one person, or instead that one person suffers to improve the prosperity of society. In ”The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” people of Omelas deal with the pain and suffering in their societies. The people of Omelas a living in an utopia and they are so happy Leguin writes, ” [O]melas sounds in my words like a city in a fairy tale, long ago and far away, once upon a time. Perhaps it would be best if you imagined it as your own fancy birds, assuming it will rise to occasion, for certainly I can not suit you all.(Leguin 1)”
In this lines Leguin states that people of Omelas is a land of fantasy and the people of Omelas have power to create ideal lifestyles for themselves. She also says ” [I] can not suit you all.(Leguin 1)” She simply suggests that, one can understand the differences between their societies like the suffering child and the ones who walk away from Omelas. Child is in a great suffering; on the other hand, rest of the city is so happy. The ones who walk away from Omelas; nevertheless, they are not happy at all because of the suffering that takes place in Omelas.
